| About Orthokeratology: Orthokeratology (Ortho-K for short), is a procedure that corrects your nearsightedness with a specially designed contact lens worn only while you sleep. In the morning you remove the contact lens and experience clear vision all day long without a need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Ortho-K has been in practice since the 1950’s (but on a limited basis). Now because of advances in lens materials, computer technology and designs, Orthokeratology can be safely offered to a larger segment of the population. |
| How does it work? Orthokeratology “mimics” laser eye surgery but without the surgery. It is completely non-invasive. No cutting or vaporizing. During sleep, the contact lens gently reshapes your cornea to correct your vision. When you remove the lens in the morning, the cornea maintains it’s new shape and therefore maintains corrected vision throughout the rest of the day. No need to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. After several months of repeated nightly wear, it is not uncommon for some people to actually go a couple of nights without having to wear the lens and still see clearly the next day. Eventually, if enough time advances without wearing the lens overnight, your vision would return back to pre-treatment levels. That’s the beauty of Ortho-K. If for some reason you are not happy with the results, unlike laser surgery it is completely reversible. |
Ortho-K vs Laser Surgery: • Ortho-K is reversible if the results are unsatisfactory by simply leaving the lenses out. Laser is irreversible if unsatisfactory. • Ortho-K can be done for children and Laser (as a general rule) cannot. • Ortho-K can be done on thin corneas but Laser requires minimum thickness. • Ortho-K does not require cutting or the vaporizing of tissue but Laser does. • Ortho-K does not require the use of prescription drugs but Laser does. • Ortho-K is much less expensive than Laser. |
